The Nursing Consortium of Florida administers the CCPS in Florida; a widely-adopted and cost-effective web-based solution that can be accessed from a desktop computer, laptop, tablet, or mobile phone. The CCPS eases the scheduling of clinical site experiences and greatly reduces the time that those at clinical and academic sites must dedicate to this activity.
In 2005, the Nursing Consortium of Florida was asked by member schools and hospitals to identify or develop a solution for scheduling student nurse clinics that would streamline the process, save time, and provide needed reporting. After conducting a national search and considering the features and benefits of available solutions, the membership selected CCPS as the desired solution and the Consortium became the Florida provider of a centralized clinical placement system, branded CCPS. CCPS was developed and is maintained by the Foundation for California Community Colleges (FCCC). The CCPS, which has since evolved with significant input from Florida users and others, has been successfully implemented in three Florida markets to date.
Prior to the implementation of CCPS, the process of clinical scheduling consisted of many email exchanges between clinical and academic partners, each recording cohort placements on spreadsheets. The process was time-consuming and was becoming increasingly stressful as nursing schools grew and new ones entered the market. There was also no reliable data on underutilized clinical space or other metrics. CCPS changed the narrative from “can more students be accommodated” to “how, when, and where more students can be accommodated.” CCPS has made the scheduling process efficient and transparent, and its standard reports have been developed to maintain executive leadership, unit managers, faculty and others informed. The Nursing Consortium of Florida provides user support that includes a responsive help desk, one-on-one user training, and annual day-long regional user conferences to provide updates on system enhancements and present best practices, solicit user recommendations, and facilitate clinical site and school rep interaction. The CCPS is a secure cloud-based system that makes scheduling clinical experiences for nursing and allied health students easy. Features such as the ability to utilize historical availability and requests when preparing for an upcoming placement cycle, the availability of a bulk acceptance or declination feature, and always current system views which maintain partners informed in real-time of placement activity, are huge timesavers that makes it possible to identify additional clinical opportunities. Scheduling activity can be conducted by an individual hospital or centralized for all hospitals in a system, or by one campus or for multiple school campuses by a single administrator or administrator team. Standard reports make a wide variety of current and historical clinical placement data available, and data can be exported and easily shared. Some such reporting is used by hospital systems to facilitate student nurse recruitment. Responsive user support is provided by designated Consortium staff supported by FCCC staff, and in person user meetings are held each summer to review new system features and best practices. There are currently 138 CCPS users in Florida including 73 schools of nursing and/or allied health and 65 hospitals in Monroe, Miami Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, and Lee counties.
